What is neurotrauma? and how common are neurotrauma injuries?
What is a neurotrauma?
A neurotrauma is any kind of trauma or physical assault to the brain or spinal cord. This could include
a blow or blunt injury (such as might occur in a motor vehicle accident) or a penetrating injury such as a bullet
or knife wound.
How common are neurotrauma injuries?
Unfortunately it is more common than you might suspect. In the U.S. there are more than 230,000
brain injuries every year that go to the hospital. Of these, approximately 50,000 die and another
80,000 end up with some form of a disability. More than 12,000 Americans every year become
paralyzed because of a spinal cord trauma. These statistics play out pretty consistently in other
countries, with the added burden of low seat belt and airbag usage.
